*This guide has been updated for the 2026 Hawaii whale watching season

When is Whale Season in Hawaii?

Whale season in Hawaii typically runs from December through April, with the highest concentration of humpback whales appearing between January and March.

Every winter, thousands of humpback whales migrate nearly 3,000 miles from Alaska to Hawaii, making this one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world. If you’re planning a trip in early 2026, January and February remain the most reliable months for sightings.

Peak Whale Watching Months (2026)

December: Early arrivals begin to appear

January – March: Peak season (highest sightings, breaching, calves)

April: End of season, occasional sightings

For travelers planning winter vacations, January through March 2026 offers the best balance of whale activity and ocean conditions.

Why Do Whales Migrate to Hawaii?

Humpback whales migrate to Hawaii to breed, give birth, and nurse their calves in warm, shallow waters.

The cold waters of Alaska are rich in food but too harsh for newborn calves. Hawaii provides:

Warm water temperatures

Fewer predators like orcas

Calm, protected channels between islands

By the time whales arrive, they have fasted for months and rely on stored energy while caring for their young before returning north in spring.

Where to See Whales in Hawaii (Best Spots)

The best whale-watching spots include Maui, Oahu, Big Island, and Kauai. You can easily spot whales from the shore or book an Oahu whale-watching tour for closer views!

Whale Breaching & Migration Behavior

One of the most unforgettable moments during whale season is witnessing a breach—when a whale launches itself out of the water and crashes back down.

You may also see:

Tail slaps

Pectoral fin waving

Mothers swimming with calves

Each whale’s tail (fluke) has a unique pattern, similar to a fingerprint. Photos can even be submitted to whale research databases to identify individual whales.

The origin of hula is wrapped in moʻolelo (legend). Some traditions honor the goddess Laka as the patron of hula; others tell how Hiʻiaka, sister of Pele, danced to honor the gods and heal the land. What’s clear is that hula began as a sacred practice performed in heiau (temples) to preserve genealogy, celebrate aliʻi (chiefs), and transmit knowledge before written language.

To Hawaiians, hula is a language without words: a way to teach respect for the land and sea, to remember origins, and to bind communities through chant and rhythm.

Two Main Styles: Kahiko & ʻAuana

Hula Kahiko (Ancient): Driven by oli (chants) and traditional percussion like the pahu drum and ipu heke (double gourd). Movements are strong, grounded, spiritual.

Hula ʻAuana (Modern): Melodic songs with guitar/ʻukulele influences; flowing lines and storytelling for contemporary audiences.

Both protect and share mana (spiritual energy) while expressing aloha ʻāina—love of the land.

Symbols and Gestures in Hula

Hula is a symbolic language of motion, watch the hands:

Hands circling overhead can represent the sun or heavens.

Arms sweeping low mimic the ocean rolling to shore.

Fluttering fingers evoke rain or the rustle of leaves in the wind.

Through these gestures, hula honors nature, shares love stories, and passes sacred myths generation to generation.

Costumes and Instruments

Traditional attire draws from nature: kapa (bark cloth) paʻu skirts, fern and flower garlands, and lei of kukui or maile. Today’s performances may feature colorful fabrics, but the intent is the same—connection to the land.

Listen for distinctive instruments:

Pahu: Sacred sharkskin drum carved from coconut trunk—deep, resonant heartbeat.

Ipu Heke: Double gourd that marks rhythm for chants and footwork.

ʻIliʻili: Smooth stones clicked like castanets to accent movement.

Costume, chant, and percussion together make hula a multisensory ceremony, not just a stage show.

Hula Today: Living Tradition

Hula thrives across Hawaiʻi—from Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo (often called the “Olympics of Hula”) to local hālau hula (schools) where students learn language, protocol, music, and the stories behind each dance.

For visitors, seeing hula at sea or on a small stage with cultural explanation turns a performance into a meaningful connection with place.

1) Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa (Reef Triggerfish)

Hawaii’s state fish sports a kaleidoscope of patterns and a name that’s longer than the fish itself. At night it can “lock” its dorsal spine to wedge into rocks for safety, and during the day it hovers and darts like a tiny helicopter with precise fin flicks.

2) Leaf Scorpionfish

Perfectly disguised as a drifting leaf, this ambush hunter gently sways with the current until prey passes by. Its spines are venomous (painful, not usually dangerous)—a classic “look, don’t touch” reminder.

Where to spot: Rock and coral edges with mild surge; a guide’s sharp eyes help a lot.

3) Flying Gurnard

Part fish, part airshow. This bottom-dweller “walks” on the sand and suddenly unfurls giant pectoral fins—electric-blue panels that look like UFO wings—to startle predators.

Where to spot: Sandy flats and rubble zones; sometimes near deeper channels off Oahu’s south and west coasts.

4) Frogfish

The reef’s master of disguise. Frogfish can change color, “walk” on fin-feet, and even dangle a fleshy lure to trick dinner within striking range. Its lightning-fast gulp creates a vacuum that swallows prey whole.

Where to spot: Sponges, algae-covered rocks, and coral heads—often hiding in plain sight.

5) Sea Cucumber

Looks like a soggy sea sausage, but sea cucumbers are the reef’s sanitation crew, recycling sand and nutrients. Some species eject sticky threads—or even organs—to distract attackers. Nature is wild.

Where to spot: Sandy patches between coral heads; move slowly and you’ll see them everywhere.

6) Boxfish (including the Yellow Boxfish)

Imagine a swimming cube with polka dots. Boxfish hover more than swim, steering with tiny fin flicks. Juveniles (bright yellow with black spots) are the cutest anomalies you’ll meet underwater.

Where to spot: Calm reefs with crevices; juveniles sometimes near sheltered lagoon areas.

7) Trumpetfish

Long and flute-like, trumpetfish stalk prey by turning vertical and blending into sea fans or pretending to be a waving stick. They’ll even shadow larger fish to sneak closer to a meal.

Where to spot: Reef slopes and drop-offs; look for motionless “sticks” pointing downward.

8) Parrotfish

With beak-like mouths, parrotfish scrape algae off coral and—believe it—create much of Hawaii’s soft, white beach sand from what they munch. At night, some spin a mucus “sleeping bag” to hide their scent.

Where to spot: Everywhere! Listen for the faint crunching sound as they graze.

9) Garden Eels

An underwater field of noodles. Dozens of pencil-thin eels sway from burrows to grab passing plankton; one ripple or careless kick and they vanish like a magician’s trick.

Where to spot: Deeper sandy slopes beyond shallow reefs; easier to view on calm, clear days.

10) Flying Fish

Built for speed, these silver bullets rocket out of the water and glide on wing-like fins for astonishing distances—sometimes pacing your boat between swells.

Where to spot: Open water off Oahu’s south and west shores, especially on boat trips in the morning.

Tips for Spotting Hawaii’s Marine Oddities

Go with a guide: Camouflage pros (frogfish, leaf scorpionfish) are hard to find solo. Guides know micro-habitats and safe, low-impact approach angles.

Move slowly: Slow kicks = more critters. Quick flailing = clouds of sand and spooked fish.

Respect wildlife: Look, never touch. Some animals have spines or sensitive skin; keep a safe distance.

Reef-safe sunscreen: Choose mineral formulas and apply 20–30 minutes before entering the water.

Morning ocean: Usually calmer with better visibility—ideal for first-timers and photography.

FAQs About Weird Sea Creatures in Hawaii

<details open="open">

What weird fish live in Hawaii?

Plenty! The humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa (Hawaii’s state fish), color-shifting frogfish, leaf scorpionfish, and hover-happy boxfish top the list. Many appear on shallow reefs that beginners can access with a guide.

</details>
<details open="open">

Where can you see unusual sea creatures in Oahu?

Reef zones off Waikiki (like Turtle Canyon) and Oahu’s west coast near Waiʻanae are great. A guided trip such as Turtles and You or Dolphins and You makes it easier—and safer—to spot camouflaged species.

</details>
<details open="open">

Are Hawaii’s weird sea creatures dangerous?

Most are harmless if observed respectfully. Some have spines (leaf scorpionfish) or can release irritants (certain sea cucumbers). Keep hands off the reef, and follow your guide’s instructions.

</details>
<details open="open">

Can beginners see these strange animals while snorkeling?

Absolutely. Calm, guided snorkels often reveal parrotfish, trumpetfish, sea cucumbers, and even frogfish if you’re lucky. Beginner tours provide flotation, instruction, and watchful crews.

</details>
<details open="open">

When is the best time to see marine life in Hawaii?

Year-round! Mornings are typically calmer with clearer water. In winter (Dec–Mar), boat tours may also spot migrating humpback whales offshore.

If you’ve ever gone snorkeling in Waikiki, there’s a good chance you’ve seen a Hawaiian green sea turtle, also called Honu, gliding peacefully over the reef. But have you ever wondered what Hawaiian honu eat on the reef? Watching them nibble at rocks or munch on floating seagrass might leave you curious about their unique feeding habits.

In this guide, we’ll explore what Hawaiian green sea turtles eat, how their diets change over time, what feeding behaviors you might observe during a Waikiki snorkeling tour, and how you can help protect these amazing marine reptiles.

What’s on the Menu? Sea Turtle Diets by Species

Sea turtles are reptiles, and just like other animals, their diet depends on their species and age. While some sea turtles are herbivores, others are omnivores—or even carnivores!

Here’s a look at what some of the world’s sea turtles eat:

Green sea turtles: Mostly herbivores as adults. They graze on algae, seaweed, and seagrass.

Hawksbill turtles: Carnivorous, feeding mainly on sponges and soft-bodied sea creatures.

Loggerhead turtles: Omnivorous, with strong jaws to crush crabs, mollusks, and jellyfish.

Leatherback turtles: Specialize in jellyfish. Their throat has backward-pointing spines to keep slippery prey from escaping.

Each species has a different diet that supports their unique lifestyle and anatomy.

The most common turtle you’ll encounter in Waikiki is the Hawaiian green sea turtle. As adults, they’re primarily herbivores. You might see them grazing on algae that grow on coral rocks or slowly biting into strands of seagrass.

Their beak is shaped perfectly for tearing plant matter. Young green turtles, however, often eat a more varied diet, including small invertebrates, before shifting to a mostly plant-based diet as they mature.
Watching one feed underwater is a calm, almost meditative experience, and it’s a key reason why Waikiki turtle snorkel tours are so popular.

Do Sea Turtles Eat Jellyfish?

Yes! While green sea turtles usually don’t hunt jellyfish, other species—like leatherbacks—do. Leatherback turtles are built for it: their jaws are soft but flexible, and their bodies are adapted for deep dives where jellyfish live in abundance.

Loggerheads and hawksbills may also eat jellyfish occasionally. However, in Hawaii, it’s more common to see herbivorous feeding behavior.

Honu Feeding Behaviors to Watch While Snorkeling

During a Waikiki snorkeling tour, you may observe turtles:

Grazing algae off coral and rocks

Hovering near patches of seagrass

Returning to favorite feeding spots

Swimming with reef fish who help clean them while they eat

These slow, graceful movements are not only relaxing to watch—they also reveal the honu’s important role in the reef ecosystem.

Respect the Honu: Marine Life Protection & Snorkel Etiquette

It’s important to remember: never touch, chase, or feed a sea turtle. Hawaiian green sea turtles are protected under both federal and state law, including the Endangered Species Act and Hawaii state wildlife regulations.

Touching a turtle can disturb their natural behavior and increase their stress levels. In fact, violating these protections can result in fines of up to $10,000 or more.
Stay at least 10 feet (3 meters) away
Use only reef-safe sunscreen to avoid harming corals and marine animals
Never block a turtle’s path or surround it
By practicing mindful snorkeling, you’re not only protecting the turtles—you’re also helping to sustain Hawaii’s delicate ocean ecosystem.

Why Diet Matters for Honu Conservation

Want to learn how to tell male and female sea turtles apart? Check out our guide on How to Tell Male and Female Sea Turtles Apart for more fascinating turtle facts.

A turtle’s diet isn’t just about nutrition—it affects their habitat, health, and role in the reef ecosystem. Green turtles help control algae levels on coral reefs, which supports reef health. Carnivorous turtles help balance prey populations.
Unfortunately, turtles sometimes mistake plastic for jellyfish or algae, which can be deadly. Learning about their diet helps us understand how to better protect them.

At Dolphins & You, we believe there’s a special connection between humans and dolphins—so much so that we named our tour after it! This bond has been talked about for thousands of years, from ancient artwork in 1500 B.C. to Aristotle’s writings about dolphin intelligence.

But what makes dolphins and humans so alike? It turns out, we share a lot more in common than you might think! From social bonds to intelligence, here are five fascinating ways dolphins are just like us—and a few surprising differences too.

1. Dolphins and Humans Are Both Mammals

Dolphins may live in the ocean, but they are mammals just like us! That means:
They give live birth
They nurse their young
They have warm blood
And yes—they even have belly buttons!

Unlike fish, dolphins must come to the surface to breathe. Instead of gills, they have a blowhole on top of their heads, which acts like a nose. And just like humans, dolphins need fresh water to survive—though they get it from the fish they eat.

2. Dolphins Have Big Brains—Even Bigger Than Ours!

Dolphins and whales have the largest brains in the ocean—even bigger than humans! While scientists are still uncovering what makes dolphin intelligence so unique, we do know they have some truly human-like abilities:
They recognize themselves in mirrors (a sign of self-awareness!)
They communicate using clicks, whistles, and squeaks
They solve problems and even use tools

Dolphins also have special brain cells associated with emotions, memory, and social interactions—just like humans. This could explain why many people feel an emotional connection when they make eye contact with a dolphin in the wild!

3. Dolphins Live in Tight-Knit Social Groups

Just like humans form families and friendships, dolphins live in pods that function like tight-knit communities. Within these pods:
Dolphins form friendships and cliques
They use unique sounds—almost like names—to identify each other
They even have disagreements and conflicts

Dolphins are incredibly social and rely on each other for protection, hunting, and play. If you ever see a pod of dolphins swimming together, you’re witnessing a complex society in action!

4. Dolphins Have “Super Senses” Unlike Any Human

While dolphins and humans share a lot of similarities, they also have some superpowers that set them apart:
Echolocation – Dolphins can “see” with sound, kind of like x-ray vision!
360° Vision – Their eyes move independently, so they can look in two directions at once.
Half-Brain Sleep – Dolphins never fully sleep; they rest one brain hemisphere at a time so they can keep breathing!

Imagine if humans could do that!

5. Dolphins Show Emotion—Just Like We Do

One of the most amazing things about dolphins is their ability to express emotions like joy, grief, and empathy. Scientists have observed dolphins:
Comforting distressed members of their pod
Playing and leaping for fun
Mourning lost companions

While dolphins don’t have facial expressions like humans, they use body language and sounds to communicate their feelings. That’s why so many people say that a dolphin encounter feels deeply personal and meaningful.

See the Similarities for Yourself!

The best way to appreciate how intelligent, social, and playful dolphins are? See them in person!

Join us at Dolphins & You for a once-in-a-lifetime experience swimming alongside wild dolphins in their natural habitat.
Do Turtles Really Like Humans?

Turtles have always fascinated us with their ancient charm and serene, slow-moving ways. Their calm demeanor often makes us wonder—do they like humans? Let’s dive into this intriguing question and explore how turtles interact with us.

Turtles are solitary creatures, often found basking alone or swimming through the ocean’s depths. Unlike dogs, who show overt affection toward their human companions, turtles don’t display the same kinds of attachment. But this doesn’t mean they’re completely indifferent. Many turtle owners observe behaviors that suggest their turtles recognize them. Some turtles even swim toward them when they appear, which shows that, while their affection might be subtle, they are aware of human presence.

Just like people, turtles have their own personalities. Some are more social, while others prefer to stay in their shell (figuratively and literally). Factors like species, upbringing, and past experiences can influence how a turtle interacts with humans. Whether they’re more relaxed or reserved, it’s important to approach them with patience and respect for their individuality.

When it comes to interacting with turtles, understanding their needs is essential. These creatures are sensitive, and overstepping their boundaries can cause them stress. By reading their body language and giving them space, you’ll build a relationship based on trust and mutual respect.

So, do turtles like humans? They may not express affection like a dog would, but many can form meaningful connections. The bond between humans and turtles is a beautiful example of interspecies interaction—and yes, we can’t help but love these majestic creatures!

Join Us for the Ultimate Turtle Experience in Waikiki!

Are you ready to get up close and personal with Hawaiian sea turtles?
