*This guide has been updated for the 2026 Hawaii whale watching season

When is Whale Season in Hawaii?

Whale season in Hawaii typically runs from December through April, with the highest concentration of humpback whales appearing between January and March.

Every winter, thousands of humpback whales migrate nearly 3,000 miles from Alaska to Hawaii, making this one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world. If you’re planning a trip in early 2026, January and February remain the most reliable months for sightings.

Peak Whale Watching Months (2026)

December: Early arrivals begin to appear

January – March: Peak season (highest sightings, breaching, calves)

April: End of season, occasional sightings

For travelers planning winter vacations, January through March 2026 offers the best balance of whale activity and ocean conditions.

Why Do Whales Migrate to Hawaii?

Humpback whales migrate to Hawaii to breed, give birth, and nurse their calves in warm, shallow waters.

The cold waters of Alaska are rich in food but too harsh for newborn calves. Hawaii provides:

Warm water temperatures

Fewer predators like orcas

Calm, protected channels between islands

By the time whales arrive, they have fasted for months and rely on stored energy while caring for their young before returning north in spring.

Where to See Whales in Hawaii (Best Spots)

The best whale-watching spots include Maui, Oahu, Big Island, and Kauai. You can easily spot whales from the shore or book an Oahu whale-watching tour for closer views!

Whale Breaching & Migration Behavior

One of the most unforgettable moments during whale season is witnessing a breach—when a whale launches itself out of the water and crashes back down.

You may also see:

Tail slaps

Pectoral fin waving

Mothers swimming with calves

Each whale’s tail (fluke) has a unique pattern, similar to a fingerprint. Photos can even be submitted to whale research databases to identify individual whales.

Whale Song: A Magical Experience on Oahu’s Waters

If you’re looking for an unforgettable whale-watching tour on Oahu, you’re in for more than just a visual treat! On our tours, you don’t just see humpback whales—you get to hear their mesmerizing songs with the help of a hydrophone.

What is a Hydrophone?

A hydrophone is an underwater microphone that captures sounds in the ocean. It’s designed to pick up even the faintest noises, including the enchanting songs of humpback whales.

Can Humans Hear Whale Songs Underwater?

Whales produce a wide range of frequencies, from 30 Hz to 8,000 Hz. However, humans can only hear part of their songs. We can’t detect the lowest frequencies, which start around 30 Hz. Humans begin hearing low sounds at around 100 Hz, so we only catch the mid-to-high notes. Despite this, the melodies you’ll hear through our hydrophone are magical and unlike anything else in nature!

Whale Songs and Sound Variations

Humpback whales make many different sounds. You may hear moans, cries, and howls. These songs are just one part of their vocal repertoire. Whales also use sounds like grunts, groans, snorts, and barks for communication and hunting. While both male and female humpback whales vocalize, it’s the males who perform the long, continuous songs we recognize as whale songs.

Humpbacks can sing for over 24 hours by forcing air through their nasal passages, despite not having vocal cords. Their songs vary depending on their population. Humpbacks in the North Atlantic sing a different song from those in the North Pacific—like regional dialects. Songs last 10-20 minutes, repeating constantly but slowly evolving over time. The theme changes in unison across the group, which remains a mystery to scientists.

While these songs usually can’t be heard by the human ear underwater, you’ll have the rare opportunity to listen through our hydrophone. It’s a truly unique experience that will immerse you in the magical world of humpback whales.

Why Do Whales Sing?

Humpback whale songs are believed to serve multiple purposes. The strongest theory links singing to mating. Males sing to attract mates, especially during the breeding season. The songs can also travel long distances, allowing whales to communicate with others across vast expanses of ocean.

Some scientists suggest that the songs might also serve a social function. Male whales may use them to challenge other males and defend their territory.

Updated: March 2026

Short Answer

No, most whales do not die from drowning.

Whales are marine mammals that must come to the surface to breathe air. However, they are highly adapted to holding their breath for long periods of time. Most whales die from natural causes such as old age, disease, starvation, or predation, rather than drwoning.

That said, whales can drown if they become trapped underwater, such as when they are entangled in fishing gear or unable to reach the surface to breathe.

Can Whales Drown?

Yes, whales can drown, but it is relatively rare in natural conditions.

Unlike fish, whales breathe air through their blowholes and must surface regularly to breathe. Because of this, whales have strong instincts and physical adaptations that help them avoid situations where they cannot reach the surface. However, drowning can happen in certain situations including:

Fishing Gear Entanglement

One of the most common human related causes of whale deaths is entanglement in fishing nets, ropes, or longlines. When whales become tangled, they may struggle to reach the surface to breathe.

Ship Strikes and Injuries

Sever injuries from ships or collisions may prevent whales from swimming properly, which can ultimately lead to drowning.

Exhaustion or Illness

A sick or extremely weakened whale may not have the strength to reach the surface for air. Although these situations occur, drowning is not the primary cause of death for most whales.

How Do Most Whales Die?

Most whale die from natural causes, just like other animals in the wild. Some of the most common causes include:

Old Age

Many whale species live for several decades. Some species, such as the bowhead whale, can live more than 100 years, with some estimates exceeding 200 years. As whales age, their immune systems weaken, making them more vulnerable to disease or starvation.

Disease

Whales can suffer from infections, parasites, and other illnesses that gradually weaken their bodies

Predation

Young whales, especially calves, are vulnerable to predators such as orcas (killer whales) and large sharks.

Environmental Stress

Changes in ocean temperature, food shortages, and pollution can also effect whale survival.

Do Whales Die of Old Age?

Yes, many whales eventually die from old age. Like other mammals, whales go through natural life stages:

Infancy

Whale calves are completely dependent on their mothers for survival. During this stage, they learn to swim, surface for air, and follow migration routes.

Juvenile Stage

Young whales begin exploring their environment and learning hunting and survival skills

Adulthood

Adult whales reach reproductive maturity and may migrate thousands of miles each year

Old Age

Over time, whales become weaker and more vulnerable to illness or environmental stress. Eventually, they die naturally.

What Happens When a Whale Dies in the Ocean?

When a whale dies in the ocean, its body often sinks to the seafloor in what scientists call a whale fall. Whale falls are incredibly important to deep see ecosystems.

A Deep Sea Food Source

A single whale carcass can provide nutrients for decades, feeding creatures such as hagfish, sleeper sharks, deep sea worms, carbs and crustaceans.

A Temporary Ecosystem

The Whale’s skeleton eventually becomes a habitat for specialized bacteria and organisms that depend on whale falls to survive. These events play an important role in maintaining deep ocean biodiversity.

Why Protecting Whales Matters

Whales are essential to the health of the ocean ecosystem. They contribute to marine life in several ways:

Supporting deep sea ecosystems through whale falls

Helping regulate ocean food chains

Contributing nutrients to marine environments

However, whales still face threats from fishing gear entanglement, ocean pollution, climate change, and ship strikes. Protecting whales helps maintain the balance of marine ecosystems around the world.

See Whales in Hawaii

If you’re visiting Hawaii during whale season, seeing humpback whales in the wild is an unforgettable experience. On the Waikiki Whale Watching Tour with Whales and You, guests can witness humpback whales breaching, tail slapping, and swimming through the waters off Oahu. This tour provide a unique opportunity to observe whales in their natural habitat while learning about marine conservation.

FAQ about Whales

Can Whales drown?

Yes, whales can drown if they become trapped underwater or are unable to reach the surface to breathe.

How do most whales die?

Most whales die from natural causes such as disease, old age, starvation, or predation.

Do Whales die of old age?

Yes, Many whale species live for decades and eventually die from natural aging.

What happens when a whale dies in the ocean?

Most whale bodies sink to the seafloor and become part of a deep sea ecosystem known as a whale fall.

Conclusion

While whales must surface to breathe, most whales do not die from drowning. Instead, they typically die from natural causes such as old age, disease, or environmental challenges. When whales die in the ocean, their bodies often sink to the seafloor, creating a whale fall that supports deep sea ecosystems for years. Understanding how whales live and die helps scientists protect these magnificent marine mammals and the oceans they call home.

Whale Watching Tips

Here are a few tips to enhance your whale-watching experience:

1. Be Patient

Whales can be elusive, so it may take time to spot them. Enjoy the beautiful scenery while you wait. Patience is key—sometimes the most magical moments happen when you least expect them.

2. Respect the 100-yard Rule

Hawaii’s regulations require that you stay at least 100 yards away from whales to protect them and their environment. Whether you’re on a boat or watching from the shore, always give these majestic creatures the space they need.

3. Bring the Essentials

Make sure you’re prepared for your whale-watching adventure with these essentials:

Binoculars for a closer view

Sunscreen and a hat to protect from the sun

A light jacket or windbreaker, as it can get chilly on the water

A waterproof phone case to capture the moment without worrying about water damage

Experiencing humpback whales up close is unforgettable. These majestic creatures are as massive as they are mysterious, and witnessing them in their natural habitat is an experience you’ll treasure forever. If you’re on Oahu, don’t miss the chance to see these gentle giants in person! In the meantime, here are some fascinating humpback whale facts to fuel your excitement.

You can see Humpback Whales in their natural habitat on our Whale Watching Tour; Whales and You!
Join Whales and You, Oahu’s premier whale-watching experience, to witness wild humpback whales in their natural habitat.

LEARN MORE ABOUT WHALE WATCHING TOUR IN OAHU

1. Humpback Whales Are Incredibly Intelligent

Humpback whales are not only smart—they’re also quite vocal! Each population communicates in its unique dialect and performs distinctive “whale songs.” Interestingly, baby whales aren’t born with these songs; they learn them from others around them. And surprisingly, only male whales sing!

2. Whale Songs Are Long and LOUD

A humpback whale’s song can be heard up to 20 miles away and may last up to 20 minutes! Males often repeat the same song for hours, creating an iconic soundtrack of the deep.

3. Diet: All About Krill

A diet of tiny krill keeps these giants going! Humpback whales consume up to 1.5 tons of krill daily to sustain their massive size. Though small, krill are a vital part of the humpback whale’s survival.

4. Females Rule in Size

Did you know female humpback whales are larger than males? Female humpbacks can reach about 50 feet in length, while males can be up to 10 feet shorter. It’s a rare case where the females outweigh the males in size!

5. They’re Really, Really Big

From their 18-foot-wide tail to their large flippers—one-third of their body length—these whales are enormous. A humpback can weigh up to 40 tons, which is around 20 times the weight of an average car!

A whale breaching out of the water

6. Globe-Trotting Giants

You might see humpback whales in warm, tropical waters or colder northern seas. They’re true travelers, migrating across the Arctic, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans. From Hawaii to Alaska, even the Arabian Sea, these whales cover a lot of ground.

7. Whale Populations: A Story of Survival

Today’s humpback whale population is around 40,000—a significant recovery, yet only about 35% of what it once was. Fortunately, conservation efforts have helped protect these incredible creatures from hunting, but challenges remain.

8. Breaching and Splashing Spectacles

Humpbacks love to breach—jumping out of the water and creating giant splashes. They also poke their heads out and slap their tails on the surface. While scientists aren’t sure why they do this, breaching may be a way for them to communicate, play, or even show off.

9. Whale Pregnancy: A Year-Long Journey

Female humpbacks have a gestation period of about a year. After giving birth every two or three years, each calf requires approximately 100 pounds of milk daily—a significant commitment for a mother whale.

10. Mostly Solo Travelers

Though some whale populations are large, humpbacks typically travel in small groups, called pods, of two to four whales. These pods often consist of a mother and her calves or close whale friends.

You’d need a really big ink pad to take that fingerprint!

11. Record-Breaking Migrations

Humpbacks undertake one of the longest migrations of any mammal, covering up to 16,000 miles annually. Their seasonal migration includes summer feeding in colder waters and winter mating in warmer regions.

12. Toothless, But Mighty

Humpbacks don’t have teeth. Instead, they use baleen plates that act like a filter, helping them separate krill and other small marine animals from the water they take in.

13. Unique Breathers

These whales have two blowholes—one for each lung! Their lungs are about the size of a small car, and unlike humans, they need to think about every breath. To sleep, they shut down only half of their brain at a time, ensuring they continue to breathe.

14. One-of-a-Kind Markings

Each humpback whale has unique markings on its underbelly, much like human fingerprints. Researchers use these distinctive patterns to identify and track individual whales.

Ready to See Humpback Whales in Person?

Hawaii’s humpback whale season runs from November to May. On the Whales and You Tour, you may spot these magnificent creatures in action. Our tour also offers the chance to swim with wild dolphins, snorkel with sea turtles, and possibly witness humpback whales firsthand.

One of the highlights of any Hawaiian adventure is the chance to encounter the Hawaiian spinner dolphins. These dolphins are known for their acrobatic displays, spinning gracefully through the air.

Hawaiian spinner dolphins were first spotted in Hawaii by John Gray in 1828. While they also live in the Eastern Pacific and Thailand, they are most commonly found in Hawaii. Some native Hawaiians call them “Nai’a” and view them as spiritual protectors. During the day, spinner dolphins rest and play in the calm bays on Oahu’s Western coast. They keep one half of their brain awake to breathe and stay safe from sharks. At night, they swim to deeper waters to hunt for lanternfish, shrimp, and squid. They are the largest hard-shelled sea turtles in the world, growing up to four feet long and weighing over 300 pounds. Out of the seven types of sea turtles, the Hawaiian green sea turtle is the most common in Hawaii’s waters. These gentle giants are a sight to behold while snorkeling.

Lastly, we can’t forget about the Hawaiian monk seals, one of the most endangered species in the world. It is currently estimated that the Hawaiian monk seal population is about 1,600 seals; about 1,200 seals reside in the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) and only about 400 in the Main Hawaiian Islands (MHI). If you encounter one, please maintain a distance of at least 50 feet, or 150 feet for mothers with pups. Respecting their space is crucial to their survival.

Seeing a Hawaiian monk seal is a rare and special experience that highlights the need for conservation and protection of these beautiful sea creatures.

Scientists have discovered that whales and dolphins use complex vocalizations to communicate with each other, leading to a deeper understanding of these intelligent and fascinating marine animals!

Whales and dolphins are both marine mammals that belong to the cetacean family. They are closely related, and many people often confuse them or use the terms interchangeably. However, there are some differences between whales and dolphins that can help distinguish them.

One way to tell whales and dolphins apart is by their physical characteristics. Whales are generally larger than dolphins, with some species reaching lengths of up to 100 feet. They also have a distinct body shape, with a large, streamlined body and a small, triangular dorsal fin. Dolphins, on the other hand, are typically smaller and more agile, with a more streamlined body and a longer, curved dorsal fin.

Another way to differentiate between whales and dolphins is by their behavior. Dolphins are known for their playful and social nature, and they are often seen jumping and leaping out of the water. They also use vocalizations, such as clicks and whistles, to communicate with each other. Whales, on the other hand, are generally more solitary and tend to be less vocal. They are also less likely to be seen performing acrobatic displays in the water.

Despite these differences, whales and dolphins share many similarities. Both are highly intelligent and have advanced cognitive abilities, and they have complex social structures and communication systems. They are also similar in their diet, with both whales and dolphins primarily feeding on fish, squid, and other marine animals.

Whales and dolphins also have a similar evolutionary history. Both are descended from a common ancestor, and they have evolved over time to adapt to their marine environment. They have also faced similar threats, including habitat destruction, pollution, and overfishing, which have had a negative impact on their populations.

Overall, whales and dolphins are closely related and share many similarities, but they also have some distinct differences. While they may be easily confused, understanding these differences can help us appreciate the unique characteristics of these amazing marine mammals.

Have Dolphins and Whales ever mated?

A wholphin is a hybrid animal that is created by breeding a male dolphin and a female whale. This type of hybrid is extremely rare and there are only a few known instances of wholphins in existence. They are typically smaller than their whale parent and larger than their dolphin parent, and they tend to have characteristics that are a mix of both species. There is still much that is unknown about wholphins, as they are very difficult to study due to their rarity and the fact that they live in the ocean.

Was there a wholphin born in Hawaii?

At Sea Life Park in Hawaii, visitors can see these rare and unique creatures swimming and interacting with their trainers. The wholphins at Sea Life Park are a popular attraction and are known for their playful and curious nature. They are also trained to perform tricks and acrobatics for the enjoyment of the guests. In addition to the wholphins, Sea Life Park also has a variety of other marine animals on display, including sea turtles, rays, and sharks.

Do Dolphins and Whales coommunicate?

Yes, dolphins and whales do communicate.

Dolphins and whales are highly intelligent and social animals, and they use a variety of vocalizations, body language, and other forms of communication to interact with each other and their environment. For example, dolphins use a range of clicks, whistles, and other sounds to communicate and navigate, while whales use vocalizations such as songs and calls to communicate over long distances.

Research on dolphin and whale communication is an active area of study, and scientists are still working to understand the many ways in which these animals communicate and the meanings behind their vocalizations and other forms of communication.

Would you like to take a Whale tour?
Whales and You (15% Off) Oahu Whale Watching Tour

Submarines were designed to resemble whales for a variety of reasons, both functional and aesthetic.

One of the primary reasons for this design choice is that whales are some of the most efficient swimmers in the animal kingdom. They are able to move through the water with grace and ease, using their streamlined bodies to minimize drag and resistance. Submarines, which must also move through the water with minimal resistance in order to remain stealthy and efficient, can benefit from this same streamlined shape.

In addition to the functional benefits of a whale-like design, there is also an aesthetic element to this choice. Whales are often seen as mysterious and elegant creatures, and the sleek lines of a submarine that resembles a whale can help to create a sense of mystique and sophistication. This can be especially important for military submarines, which may want to project an image of power and sophistication.

There are also practical considerations that make a whale-like design particularly well-suited for submarines. For example, the bulbous shape of a whale’s head can be used to house sensitive equipment or sensors, while the long, slender body of the submarine can be used to accommodate the crew and other necessary systems.

Overall, the design of a submarine as a whale-like creature is a practical and aesthetically pleasing choice that helps to optimize the vessel’s performance and functionality.

Did whales play a role during World War II?

During World War II, whales played a small but important role in the conflict.

Many of the products that were derived from whales, such as oil, were used as a source of fuel and lubrication for the military. In addition, whales were hunted for their meat, which was a valuable source of protein for troops. Finally, whales were also used as a means of naval communication, as their songs can travel long distances underwater.

Where whales under stress during the time of World War II?

It is not known if whales experienced stress during World War II. While it is possible that some whales may have been affected by the conflict in some way, it is difficult to determine the emotional states of animals, especially those that live in the ocean. Additionally, there are many factors that can impact the well-being of whales, such as food availability, habitat degradation, and human activities like hunting and fishing. It is important to remember that whales are intelligent, complex animals with their own unique behaviors and needs, and we should strive to protect and care for them.

Would you like to take a Whale tour?
Whales and You (15% Off) Oahu Whale Watching Tour
