そんなハワイは、アメリカの50番目の州、アメリカ合衆国になるまでは、一つの独立国だったという事は、みなさんご存知ですか。今でもハワイ独特の文化がまだ色濃く残っています。ここに住むアメリカ人の人たちもそんなハワイの文化に敬意を示していると思います。また、ハワイでは、もちろん、みんな英語を話しますが、センテンスの中には、ハワイの単語がゴロゴロ入ってたりします。それもそのはず、ハワイ州では、英語の他にハワイ語も公用語となっているんです。

ハワイ語は思いを伝える重要な役割

ハワイ語は口承で伝えられてきた言葉で、詩や歌、フラで思いを伝える重要な役割を果たしてきました。1820年代にローマ字化され、現在では英語と並ぶ公用語として大切にされています。なので、みんな普通に使っているので、旅行者の皆さんも覚えているととっても便利だと思います。今日は、役に立つハワイ語ベスト5を紹介します。

1　ALOHA（アロハ）

もちろん一番よく耳にする言葉は、ALOHA（アロハ）です。アロハは、「こんにちは」「ありがとう」「さようなら」など、いろいろな場面で使えるのでとっても便利です。そして、「愛」という意味でもよく使われます。

ALOHAは、これらの言葉の頭文字をとって作られたとも言われています。
Aは、Akahai（思いやる心）
Lは、Lokahi（調和）
Oは、Oluolu（寛大）
Hは、HaaHaa（謙虚）

2　MAHALO（マハロ）

マハロは「ありがとう」という感謝を示す言葉です。この言葉もアロハと同様、どこでも耳にします。お店で買い物をしたとき、レストランで食事をした時、バスの中でも、みんなが使う言葉です。ビジネスや少し丁寧ないい方になると、MAHALO NUI LOA（マハロヌイロア＝本当にありがとうございます）と言います。

3　ONO（オノ）

さて次は、オノ。オノは「おいしい」という意味です。レストランに行ったら、ぜひ、「オノ！」と使ってみてくださいね！

4　PAU（パウ）

パウは「終わり」という意味です。よく聞くのは、レストランで、「もう食べ終わりましたか？」という意味で、「パウ？」と聞かれたりします。それに、PAU HANA (パウハナ)という言葉もよく聞きます。パウは「終わり」、ハナは「仕事」という意味で「仕事の後のお楽しみ」という意味で使われます。どこの国で同じようによく金曜日に使います。PAU HANA (パウハナ)には、みんなで飲みに行くのが定番です。

5　MAUKA（マウカ） と　MAKAI（マカイ）

この2つの言葉は、セットで覚えておくと便利です。マウカは「山側」、マカイは「海側」という意味です。これは、ロケーションを説明する時に使います。ハワイは、小さいので、山側、海側だけで、ほとんど説明できちゃいます。アラモアナショッピングセンターのフードコート「マカイマーケット」も海側にあるからです。ホノルルにいる場合は、これに加え、「ダイヤモンドヘッド」（東側）、エヴァ（西側）を使ってロケーションを説明します。ダイヤモンドヘッドはよく知られていますが、エヴァは、西側にある有名なビーチの名前です。

他にも覚えていると便利なのが、KOKUA（コクア）。これは、「協力する、助け合う」という意味です。ハワイを走る「The Bus」の中でも「Please Kokua」（ご協力お願いします）とアナウンスが流れたり、公共の場にサインが貼ってあったりします。

また、ハワイ語の発音は、それぞれの文字が母音で終わり、日本語と同じ発音の仕方をするので、英語の発音が苦手な私たちも間違わないで発音できます。英語よりハワイ語を勉強するのもいいかもですね（笑）
