One of the most popular hiking trails in Hawaiʻi will be closed through the end of June, 2023 for repairs and maintenance.
Repairs to sections of the Mānoa Falls trail will begin Monday, June 26th, 2023.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources announced that heavy equipment will be used for run-off trail hardening and run-off management to fix soil erosion and slippery conditions.
A DLNR spokesperson said “The temporary closure will ensure everyoneʻs safety as heavy equipment will be operating on potentially unstable terrain.”
Mānoa Falls sees an average of 200,000 visitors a year. Heavy foot traffic and regular wet climate in Mānoa Valley creates uneven conditions.
During the trail closure there are other hiking options to consider, such as joining And You Creations, Nature & You Waimea Valley Waterfalls tour.
And You Creations provides transportation and a guided tour from Waikiki to the North Shore and Waimea Valley. The tour will first stop at Green World Coffee for beverages and a light breakfast before heading to Waimea Valley.
Swimming at Waimea falls is dependent on daily waterfall conditions. Lifeguards will determine if the swim is safe at 9am.
After hiking in Waimea Valley learning about the life and culture of ancient Hawaiian people, visiting Hawaiian cultural sites and exploring botanical garden collections of thousands of different plant species from around the World, we will have lunch from Ke Nui Kitchen in Waimea Valley.
The shuttle and guide will then escort you to Dole Plantation for optional souvenir shopping. And a possible delicious Dole Whip!
